How To Reduce Eye Strain When Working From Home?

Work from home is popular in the UK more than anywhere else in the world. Companies have adopted a hybrid approach to working and resuming their business operations amid the pandemic.

As your eyes are moving from one screen to the other, eye strain problems have become common among people in the UK.

Prolonged blue light exposure (emitting from digital screens) can damage the retinal cells and lead to macular degeneration or loss of central vision.

WFH eye strain became a common thing among people in the UK in 2020. So many people bought online specs to prevent digital eye strain and protect their eye health. If you’re also working from home, we’ve got tips for you to help you get rid of eye strain.

How To Minimise Eye Strain?

If you have no other option than to spend 8 hours a day in front of your laptop, here’s how you can give your eyes a break and reduce eye strain.

Use Blue Light Glasses

Blue light glasses will shield your eyes from damaging blue waves emitted by the display screens. Blue light is unfocused and reduces the contrast on the screen. Thus, your eyes have to work even harder to focus which leads to eye strain.

You can buy blue light glasses even if you don’t have a prescription. Or, you can also add blue light filters to your lenses for digital protection.

However, you can add this filter once your lenses are made and fit into the frame. But, you can reglaze glasses and fit new lenses that have blue light filters into your existing frame.

Break The Cycle

Avoid continuous exposure to blue light as it increases the chances of digital eye strain. Taking short breaks in between your screen time sessions will give your eyes time to relax. This way, you won’t be bothered by eye strain or headaches from screen time.

Optimise Your Lighting

The lights in your room are more important than you might think. Working in too bright or too dim light will strain your eyes in no time.

It’s important to make sure that your room is amply lit as per the brightness of your screen. You should also reduce glare (light reflections on the screen that make it appear white). Close the windows or put your workstation in a place so the windows are to the sides instead of front or back.

Maintain Proper Distance From Your Device

Sitting in close proximity to display screens can take a toll on your eye health.  Make sure your gadget is at least 25 inches away from you so the blue light is not blasting your eyes.

Blink More

When you’re so focused on something, you forget to blink or blink less than normal. This holds true when your eyes are locked to the screen.

You don’t blink as much as needed when you’re looking at flashing screens. Thus, you start to develop problems such as dry eyes over time.

Increase The Font Size

Big font size doesn’t put as much burden on your eyes as small prints. So, you can increase the font size on your screen to make screen time a little comfortable for your eyes.

Also, if you use reading glasses, then you already have trouble reading small prints. Increasing the font size will help your eyes and make letters more visible.
